Terrain
Getting into the water at Carioca isn't easy. First, you have to carry your equipment down the stairs from the parking lot to the beach, and then, of course, back up again after the dive. The beach is rocky and often very wavy, making entry more difficult.
The underwater landscape consists of volcanic reef tongues enclosing a sandy bay. On one side, the reef wall extends to a break at a depth of 20 meters. The steep wall at the break drops vertically from 12 meters to 24 meters. Below, the lava tongue continues down the steep sandy bottom to a depth of 40 meters.
On the other side, you can descend the reef to an overhang with a volcanic cave at a depth of 38 meters.
The dive site can be reached by bus in about 30 minutes via the highway.
Flora & Fauna
Many sardines and barracudas, trumpetfish, sea anemones, sardines, bream, moray eels, often stingrays, angel sharks, and barracudas. Garden eels are found everywhere on the sandy bottom.
