Terrain
The Punta Prieta dive site has a rocky beach as an entry point. There are often some waves here, which makes entry and exit somewhat more challenging. The underwater landscape consists of volcanic reefs with steep walls and overhangs. Below this is a sloping sandy bottom with further lava reef tongues. At a depth of approximately 22 meters, the reef forms a flat table with a steep wall that drops vertically to 35 meters. At the base of the wall at 35 meters, there is a large overhang (cave) that can be entered by several divers at once. In front of the overhang, the reef wall continues along the coast, and many moray eels can be found in the crevices.
When divers stay below the overhang, their exhaled air eventually penetrates the porous volcanic rock and emerges in beautiful columns of bubbles on the sandy table above the cave.
The dive site is about 40 minutes by bus via the highway from our base.
Flora & Fauna
Here we find all kinds of moray eels, many trumpetfish, barracudas, grunts, bream, sardines, and often rays. We've also spotted seahorses and toadfish (very rare)!
