Terrain
The Throat of the Whale is a volcanic cave that begins at a depth of 18 meters and drops to approximately 32 meters at the rear. The entrance to this volcanic cave is studded with sea urchins on the ceiling and floor, giving the wide but shallow cave entrance the impression of a giant, snarling mouth. If you bravely dive in, you'll descend through a vertical shaft, the "Throat of the Whale," from 20 meters to 32 meters. You'll reach a deep canyon. Continuing north from here, you'll reach the "Rio Diabolo" via a terraced lava flow to a reef tongue with vertical walls that drop from about 18-20 meters down to 60 meters.
This dive site is only suitable for advanced and experienced divers, as it is a deep dive and there are almost always currents, which you'll have to contend with, especially in the "Rio Diabolo" area.
The boat ride to this dive site is only about 15 minutes. Our Master Instructor Thomas discovered this dive site by chance a few years ago during a PADI Drift Diving course while drifting past the cave entrance.
