Terrain
The Valley of the Fishes lies on the volcanic cliff edge off the coast of Puerto de la Cruz. The cliff edge forms a large headland that extends far out from the main massif. On the east side, the cliff drops vertically to a depth of 48 m. From a depth of about 30 m, the cliff is studded with the typical hexagonal basalt columns formed by the cooling of lava. This gives the wall a man-made appearance.
To the west, the reef edge drops vertically to a depth of 50 m. In the middle of the reef tongue is a small canyon. In the incision, which extends from 18 m to 25 m deep, we often find moray eels and other underwater creatures on the side walls. At the southern end of the reef tongue, it is only about 3 m wide. If you lie down on the reef edge, you can wait for a group of groupers to come up the wall from the depths and curiously observe the divers looking down at them from above.
For very experienced divers with more than advanced licenses, we can offer a highlight here. To the north of the reef tongue, between 38 and 46 meters deep, you'll find beautiful, large orange hard corals, so-called Dendrophilia.
The journey to this reef takes only 10 minutes. However, since this dive is well over 20 meters deep, this site is not suitable for any open water divers and divers with little experience.
