Entry and exit are via the mooring platforms inside the romantic, small fishing port of Puerto de la Cruz. This dive site is one of the most underrated dive sites. We can drive our dive buses right up to the entry point and don't have to carry any equipment. When we say we're diving at the port, everyone thinks of ships, dirt, and oil. But our port here in Puerto is completely different; it's actually a reef with a wall built to protect the city.
Even as we descend into the harbor basin, we are surrounded by fish. With a depth of 6m, this area is ideal for beginner courses, which we hold here when the sea is calm. Outside the harbor, a reef extends into the open sea with a break at 18m. We can dive up to this point with all beginners with an Open Water Diver license.
But the reef continues beyond this, and the 3-anchor tour begins. At 27m, we reach the first of the three anchors, clear a reef edge, and reach a tunnel at 28m that we can dive through. Just beyond, we find the second anchor of the tour, larger than a stretched-out diver with fins. On the way back, we come to a crack in the reef into which the third anchor has been pulled deep, and it becomes absolutely clear why the sailors had to cut the chain.
This dive site is often used as a night dive on the reef down to 18m.
